Scottsdale’s Museum of the West Opens

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West will open its doors to the public Thursday, Jan. 15. The museum is located at 3830 N. Marshall Way, in the heart of Downtown Scottsdale.

 The museum will celebrate the art, history and culture of the American West. It will feature exhibitions of Western art, historic artifacts and compelling stories of the old and new West, plus exciting events.

 The $11.4 million, 43,000 square-foot museum is owned by the city of Scottsdale and operated by a nonprofit called Scottsdale Museum of the West.

 The museum will feature rotating exhibitions of Western art and cultural treasures on loan from some of the world’s foremost collectors and institutions. Interactive games and activities as well as multimedia kiosks located throughout the galleries will engage children and adults, providing insights into the art and artifacts on exhibit. 

 Opening exhibitions are scheduled to include:

• Inspirational Journey: The Story of Lewis and Clark Featuring the Artwork of Charles Fritz

• Process and Materiality: The Bronze Artistry of John Coleman with Erik Petersen

• Fine Art of the American West: People and Places, featuring a diverse and engaging selection of works by leading Western artists.

• The A.P. Hays Spirit of the West Collection, featuring saddles, spurs and other quintessentially Western items.

 The museum also will feature an outdoor Sculpture Courtyard with a changing array of exhibits. An auditorium will host performances, special programs and events and a film presentation which will highlight the story of the West.

 The museum will be hosting a community celebration on Feb. 14, in conjunction with Scottsdale’s Parada del Sol Parade and our state’s Birthday. 

 Regular hours will be Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. During Scottsdale ArtWalk Thursdays, the museum will have extended hours through 9:30 p.m.

 Admission is $13 for adults, $11 for seniors 65-plus and active military, $8 for students and children ages 6 to 17. Admission is free for children ages 5 and under, and special group rates are also available.
