HEADLINES

Most city offices closed Monday for Presidents Day. While most city offices will be closed for Presidents Day Monday, Feb. 20, your trash will be collected as scheduled. Please place your containers in their typical spot by 5 a.m. the morning of collection or the night before.

 

Mayor delivers State of the City Address Wednesday. The program takes place at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch, 7700 E. McCormick Parkway. General admission is free, and Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane’s remarks start at 12:30 p.m. An 11:30 a.m. reception and lunch can be purchased for $50. Proceeds benefit Operation Fix It, a program that teams volunteers and businesses to assist homeowners or tenants who are physically or financially unable to maintain their properties. Tom’s Thumb trailhead and surrounding trails closed Wednesday. This brief closure Feb. 22 will allow a helicopter to airlift rock and materials to the sight to stabilize drainage areas. Access will be available at sunrise Thursday, Feb. 23.

Watch the recent dedication of the Carolyn Allen Amphitheater at Brown’s Ranch in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Allen spent 16 years as an Arizona lawmaker supporting and protecting the land.  


EVENTS

Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show continues through Feb. 26 at WestWorld. Since 1955, the annual horse show has set the pace in the Arabian horse world … growing from 50 horses to more than 2,000 horses – bringing top owners, trainers and breeders from around the world competing for a chance to win.

 

Canal Convergence Water + Art + Light runs Feb. 23-26. This free, four-day event brings interactive, contemporary art installations by local and international artists from 4 to 10 p.m. daily to the Scottsdale Waterfront. Highlights include artist talks, artist-led workshops, a special screening of short films, live music and performances, and a nighttime light-up bike ride along the Arizona Canal. Celebrate Scottsdale founder’s birthday. Scottsdale Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane and Arizona’s Official State Historian Marshall Trimble will provide brief tributes at noon Friday, Feb. 24, at the Scottsdale Historical Museum, 7333 Scottsdale Mall. Call the Scottsdale Historical Museum at 480-945-4499 for more information.

Teens can apply for Public Safety Academy. Those 14 to 18 can gain hands-on life skills while learning about careers in law enforcement and fire services June 5-9. Application deadline is Saturday, April 1, but seats fill fast, so apply soon.

Between You, Me, and the Fencepost. Humorous and insightful, Joe Jeffrey shares his knowledge of what he considers to be one of the most important building blocks that tamed the Old West: fence posts. This program takes place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, 3830 N. Marshall Way.

 

Scottsdale offers a variety of water aerobics classes to suit everyone’s needs. Get fit in the Shallow Water Aerobics class, relax the body and mind in Eldorado’s Tai Chi class or try the low-impact Ache Away Water Exercise class. Get times, locations and registration information.

 

Library offers program on market research for business owners. Get the one-up on your competitors at this free workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Civic Center Library.

 

STEAM Storytime has something for the entire family. Explore the concepts related to STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art/design and math at these free library programs. Various times and locations are available throughout February.
