Retraction of The Peak’s Sept. 15th Scottsdale Edge Article

September 17, 2017

We’re sorry. A Peek at the Peak (The Peak) magazine republished a newsletter that included erroneous information about NODDC leader Mike Norton.

The September 15th Update Issue of The Peak contained an article entitled “Scottsdale Edge: Confrontation Erupts at WestWorld Over DDC.” The Peak‘s article, provided a link – without any additional commentary – to the Scottsdale Edge newsletter.

The Peak emailed the official notice of the publication of The Peak‘s September Update Issue to subscribers at 3:34 p.m. on the 15th.  By 7:25 p.m. that evening, The Peak had received and posted several reader comments about the article. Two of these comments indicated that Scottsdale Edge had it wrong and that Mike Norton was not at WestWorld the day of the purported incident. It’s not unusual to quickly receive comments from NO DDC supporters about any article related to Desert Edge.

At 7:26 p.m., The Peak received a comment from Mr. Norton. Norton stated that he was not at WestWorld. Immediately, The Peak temporarily removed the article from its website and contacted Desert Discovery Center Scottsdale (DDCS) to determine if Norton was at WestWorld as reported by the Scottsdale Edge article. On the 16th, “Sam” Campana, who was  mentioned in the Scottsdale Edge piece, confirmed that Mike Norton was not at WestWorld and that it was a case of misidentification. Campana also indicated that she did not know who publishes Scottsdale Edge. Others that I heard from agreed that Norton was wrongly identified as being at the event..

This was not an intentional act on The Peak’s part. Scottsdale Edge, an electronic newsletter, is concise, timely, well-written, and covers various topics related to Scottsdale. Newspapers, magazines and newsletters make mistakes and this appears to be a case of reporter misidentification. Today, every issue of The Peak contains electronic links to many press releases, newsletters, blogs, videos and websites and we rely on their publishers to ensure the accuracy of those publications.

Mr. Norton, The Peak apologizes for making the erroneous Scottsdale Edge story available to Peak readers. We apologize to our readers too.

The Peak‘s article and the link to the Scottsdale Edge article have been permanently removed from The Peak‘s website. The Peak will no longer republish issues of Scottsdale Edge until The Peak has confidence in the integrity the newsletter’s content.
