LIBRARY FEATURE EVENT

dfl_feb_lindbergSaturday, February 13, 10:30 a.m. – Noon
The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case
The 1932 kidnapping of the only son of Charles Lindbergh, America’s foremost hero of the day, truly became the crime of the last century- a crime that went unsolved for nearly 2½ years until the arrest of Bruno Richard Hauptmann in 1934. Hauptmann was convicted and finally executed in 1936. But just as with the assassination of President Kennedy, numerous conspiracy claims and subsequent doubts regarding the guilt of Hauptmann resulted in multiple books supporting these theories. In 1981 a lawsuit was filed by Hauptmann’s widow accusing the prosecutor and the State of New Jersey of a wrongful conviction and execution of her husband. At the request of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in 1982, Lucien C. Haag, Criminalist, examined the retained physical evidence and the trial exhibits archived in West Trenton, NJ. This presentation by Mr. Haag will cover the crime and crime scenes, the lengthy investigation, the arrest of Hauptmann, the evidence, the trial and the aftermath. Register: 480-488-2286.

Cinematic Reflections on WWII: Little Known Stories of the War
The Man Who Never Was
World War II is one of the best known and widely depicted conflicts in history. This film series will explore little known stories from that war — stories filled with daring, intrigue, and sometimes such improbability that they have to be seen to be believed. At the heart of each one are the men and women who made World War II modern history’s seminal event. A post-film discussion, facilitated by Gary Zaro, faculty WWII expert from Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), will follow. This month: On the eve of the Allied invasion of Sicily, the allies dressed up a corpse and loaded him up with fake invasion plans for Greece, to dupe the Germans into believing the charade. Recommended Reading: Operation Mincemeat: How a Dead Man and a Bizarre Plan Fooled the Nazis and Assured an Allied Victory by Ben Macintyre. Register: 480-488-2286.

LIBRARY FEATURE EVENT

dfl_feb_islam_womanMonday, February 29, 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Fundamentalism in the Middle East
In our world today, the significance of the Middle East, religious fundamentalism, and the plight of women are vital and timely topics. While the media focuses on jihadism and its apocalyptic extremes, the people of the Middle East long for basic human rights, freedom and equality. Award-winning speaker and author Nahid Sewell was born and raised in Iran, before the Islamic Revolution, and is a human rights advocate. Sewell has written hundreds of articles and four non-fiction books, with several TV and radio appearances. Through her debut novel, The Ruby Tear Catcher ($15, cash or check) she explores the impact of religious fundamentalism on the people of Iran, particularly on women. She describes life before and after the Islamic Revolution, evoking images of blue-tiled mosques, Persian kings, the taste of lamb kabob and saffron rice in contrast with curfews, gun-toting soldiers, and women covered in chadors who long for equal rights. Describing the radical changes under Islamic rule, Sewell charts the social, cultural, political and religious changes that have taken shape in her country in the past thirty years. Register: 480-488-2286.
