There are a number of new and exciting events in December and January at the Foothills Community Foundation! FCF-HCC offers classes and programs at the Holland Community Center, 34250 N 60th Street, Building B, Scottsdale AZ 85266. Online registration and details are available at www.azfcf.org

 

SPECIAL EVENTS

Antique Appraisal

Art and Antiques expert Elena von Kohn will provide informal appraisals on your antiques and collectables. Categories include: fine art, small furniture, ceramics, glassware, vintage photographs, advertising, folk art, assorted toys, metalware, clocks, costume jewelry, and antiques. $25 per item, maximum of 2 per client. Proceeds benefit FCF.

Visual Arts Lecture Series

The Foothills Community Foundation is once again offering a series of lectures on the Visual Arts. Experts from the Phoenix Art Museum and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art will be presenting exciting programs on January 22, 29, February 5 and 12. The topics are:
Jan. 22: “More Than Just a Window”
Jan. 29: “Great Patrons of Art”
Feb. 5: “Fritz Scholder Super Indian”
Feb. 12: “How to Appreciate, Approach, Live With and Enjoy Contemporary Art”

 

THE ARIZONA SAGE ART MARKET

The Holland Community Center is proud to host this premier art show for the 3rd year in a row. There will be 35 juried, fine art artists. They are making their art available to the public at reasonable prices, most under $300. Come to this indoor show, mingle with the artists, enjoy a treat from the wonderful bakery on site, and have a real home-town shopping experience. February 3, 2018 from 10:00 – 5:00 pm. Proceeds help the FCF with their community outreach programs.

CHRISTMAS BINGO

Join us December 21 at 12:00 for a pre-BINGO lunch— we’ll provide a main lunch dish and water, you bring a delicious side dish or a dessert! Cards go on sale at 1:00, starting at $15.00. Bingo takes place every Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Holland Community Center. Visit www.azfcf.org for more information.

 

HOLLAND GALLERY OF ART

The third show of the season will soon take place in the Holland Gallery of Fine Art, and it is being put on by the Contemporary Watercolorists of Arizona. The show will run from December 15 – January 26. This is a wonderful opportunity to see and experience some incredible art!
Contemporary Watercolorists of Arizona was created by a group of professional teachers and accomplished artists in 1969. Their purpose was to paint and critique watercolors of their uniquely creative styles. Annual exhibits offer a feast for the eyes as well as an intellectual and emotional tour of the inner visions and personal messages of the artists. There will be an Artists’ Reception on Saturday, January 13, from 4:30-6:30 PM.

Canvas & Coffee
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Join Sunny Hall, owner of Paint and Gogh, for a creative painting experience that is a step-by-step guided acrylic painting class. You will take home your 16″ x 20″ acrylic painting of a flowering prickly pear cactus at the end of the class. All supplies are furnished, including easels, paint, canvas, aprons and brushes. Morning Joe with TED
9:00 – 11:00 AM
Fresh coffee and hot topics! Nothing beats a fresh cup of coffee and gathering with interesting people. This is 8 month series, and each month a different topic will be explored through the TED talks medium, which consists of a short video (20 min.), with host, Mark Sweeney, facilitating conversation afterwards. ($2 at the door). The topic for December is:
Entertainment: Movie Magic using science and math to create special effects!

Art, Coffee, and Conversation

Meet with the artists currently showing at the Holland Center (The Contemporary Watercolorists of Arizona) in an informal and informational discussion about the creative process. Led by Catherine Ross.

Catherine Ross, Fiber Artist, just won the People’s Choice Award for her beautifully innovative work, “Around and Around We Go”, an installation of 27 hand made 18″ x 36″ suspended leaves, luminous with color and vibrant with depth, made of natural fibers, paper, and wood. This display was part of the “Beyond Turbulence” show at the Holland Gallery of Fine Art, which will be at the Holland Center until December 7.

Presentation on Pain Management

In this seminar, you will learn about the keys to an accurate diagnosis, the importance of steering clear from the symptom-only treatments and hear about amazing new technologies now available to treat the pain source. Dr. Thakkar, who practices locally at AZ Pain Doctors near the Boulders, will host an informal question and answer period following the presentation; refreshments will be served. An introduction to the challenging game of Bridge. Focus is on the fundamentals of bidding, play of the hand and defense.

Bridge Two Over One
1:00 – 3:00
Learn the Two Over One Bidding System. Two Over One is game force bidding. It is a contemporary tool to ensure more precise bidding. Students must have a working knowledge of basic conventions.

Monday, January 15
Beginning Mahjongg
9:00 – 12:00
Learn how to play Mahjongg, whether you have never played or simply want a refresher. This 4-week class is for you!
