Recently, there has been a lot of talk from luminaries such as Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, and others about the dangers of artificial intelligence – AI – and how, if we’re not careful and don’t control it, AI will mean the end of humanity. How serious a threat is AI, really? And what is AI to begin with? Can we seriously hope to control a technology that might be much smarter than we are? Writers Connection: He Said/She Said: Writing Great Dialogue
Dialogue is about characters sharing conflict, a piece of themselves either internally or externally. Great dialogue makes characters relatable and real, and the reader can’t help but invest. Tracy Ewens, writer of smart romance novels, will break down the many elements that make for terrific dialogue and give examples from memorable books and movies. Cinematic Reflections on WWII: Little Known Stories of the War
Garbo: The Spy
World War II is one of the best known and widely depicted conflicts in history. This film series will explore little known stories from that war — stories filled with daring, intrigue, and sometimes such improbability that they have to be seen to be believed. At the heart of each one are the men and women who made World War II modern history’s seminal event. A post-film discussion, facilitated by Gary Zaro, faculty WWII expert from Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), will follow. This month: Garbo the Spy (1942) (88 min.): The unbelievable story of one of the most unlikely double agents in the war, who almost brought down the Nazi spy service (Abwehr) and saved thousands of lives on D-Day. Children ages 2½ to 6, or those who have not yet entered kindergarten, are encouraged to join us for a 30-minute storytime featuring books, music, flannel stories and puppets. Each week there will be an activity of some kind that follows the stories. Some weeks it may be a movement or music activity, and other weeks will include an art activity. Siblings are welcome. Registration is not required.

The Library hosts the 5th performance of Duet – Musicfest at the Desert Foothills Library with maestro Robert Moody and a variety of musicians. There will be Prosecco, coffee and dessert with the participants following the performance. The fee of $30 for this event benefits the Library and AZMusicfest, both non-profit organizations. Dr. Steve Carol, PhD History, specializes in the modern Middle East and other historical periods. Dr. Carol is Associate Producer and frequent guest of Middle East Radio Forum.

Les Conklin is a resident of north Scottsdale He founded Friends of the Scenic Drive, the Monte de Paz HOA and is the president of the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association. He was named to Scottsdale's History Maker Hall of Fame in 2014. Les is a past editor of A Peek at the Peak and the author of Images of America: Pinnacle Peak. He served on the Scottsdale's Pride Commission, McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission, the boards of several local nonprofits and was a founding organizer of the city's Adopt-A-Road Program.. Les is a volunteer guide at the Musical Instrument Museum.
