Bridge: Skill Building
For players with some experience who would like to improve their skills, you will develop bridge skills and strategies and socialize. Supervised play will help illustrate more advanced conventions as they are taught. If participants are interested, the instructor will teach the “new’ standard in bridge – the 2 over 1 style of play. Instructor: Peter Blake-Ward

Bridge: Supervised Play
Designed for more experience players. Each class begins with a mini-lesson on hints in bidding and play. Participants play randomly dealt hands, during which the instructor goes over bidding and play. The instructor also provides pre-dealt hands that all of the participants play. The instructor then reviews bidding and play and provides a written critique of each hand with suggestions. Participants may keep this analysis for future reference. Instructor: Peter Blake-Ward.

Thunder Birds: Soldiers of the Air
World War II is one of the best known and widely depicted conflicts in history. This film series will explore little known stories from that war — stories filled with daring, intrigue, and sometimes such improbability that they have to be seen to be believed. At the heart of each one are the men and women who made World War II modern history’s seminal event. A post-film discussion, facilitated by Gary Zaro, faculty WWII expert from Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), will follow. This month: Thunder Birds (1942) (78 min.): Technicolor wartime film that offers patriotism and a love story set in the Arizona desert. Recommended Reading: In the Shadow of the Reich by Niklas Frank and The Himmler Brothers: A German Family History by Katrin Himmler. Presented in partnership with PVCC. Register: 480-488-2286.

Join us for a fascinating evening with Cave Creek Mayor Francia, who as General Manager of Turf Paradise, the only horse track in Phoenix, will share stories and insights (and perhaps a few tips? You do not want to miss this talk!). Considered to be Arizona’s first sports franchise, its doors opened on January 7, 1956 in what was then a barren desert serviced by two dirt roads that stretched south towards the fledgling city of Phoenix. Michael Birt, PhD, director of the Center for Sustainable at ASU’s Biodesign Institute, will discuss the dramatic aging of populations around the world. The near doubling of life expectancy is among the greatest achievements in human history. While individual longevity is a cause for great celebration, “healthy” life expectancy will be the new metric of success for society. His work focuses on the promise of innovative digital and wearable technologies to help us sustain health, especially for older adults and their caregivers. He was named to Scottsdale's History Maker Hall of Fame in 2014. Les is a past editor of A Peek at the Peak and the author of Images of America: Pinnacle Peak. He served on the Scottsdale's Pride Commission, McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission, the boards of several local nonprofits and was a founding organizer of the city's Adopt-A-Road Program.. Les is a volunteer guide at the Musical Instrument Museum.
