dfl_legends_summerMay 18, 1 – 2:30 p.m.
Legends of Summer
Presented by Dr. Sharonah Fredrick, Assistant Director, Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (ACMRS).  Part of the ACMRS Global Mythology Series:  From the ancient Celts through the Hopi peoples of the American Southwest,   the period of the Summer Solstice was a time filled with enchantment, fear, and anticipation:  the period when portals between the worlds of the supernatural and those of humans were brushed aside.  It was, quite simply, what Shakespeare would later term as a “midsummer night’s dream.”  In the Southern hemisphere, where summer arrives in December, the sun was celebrated by cultures below the equator as the time when the young child-sun replaced the winter deities and recreated the world anew.  This talk will take us on a folkloric trip including Celtic Ireland, medieval Arizona, the Mediterranean, and the sun worshiping Incas.  It will map the significance that the sun had for humanity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, as well as understanding how these older beliefs continue to influence our modern-day world.  Register:  480-488-2286.
