Cactus Shadows High School Receives Top Awards for Publications

Cactus Shadows High School received two top awards for their newspaper and literary magazine publications. The CS Press received a Gold Crown, and Shadows literary magazine received a Silver Crown. The Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced its top awards for scholastic publications at the 92nd annual Scholastic Convention on March 18 of this year.

This year, a total of 1,186 newspapers, magazines and yearbooks and digital publications issued during the 2014-2015 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2016 Crown Awards program.

This is the fourth Gold Crown Award for the newspaper. They have also received two Silver Crowns from CSPA, and four Pacemaker Awards from the National Scholastic Press Association. The literary magazine has received three Gold Crowns in the past, and three Pacemaker Awards. The magazine is also a finalist for a Pacemaker award this year.

The grand total of 234 Crowns consists of four digital magazines, 18 digital news, seven hybrid magazines, 52 hybrid news, 60 magazines, 28 print newspapers and 65 yearbooks. Of these, 199 Crowns will be given to scholastic publications and 35 Crowns to collegiate publications.

During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. Crown Awards summarize overall excellence in the entire publication while Medalist Critiques compare each publication against a printed set of standards contained in the written scorebook.

The CSPA is an international student press association, owned and operated by Columbia University since 1925, uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs.
