Also known as strawberry cactus, Engelmann’s cactus, torch cactus and Engelmann’s hedgehog. A member of the Cactus Family.

  • Can grow up to 20″ in height. Largest specimens found along the drive are approximately 8″ tall.
  • Green, cylindrical stems grow in clusters. The plant blooms during March through April.
  • Prefer sandy soil and hillsides at elevations up to 5,000′.
  • Cup-shaped flowers are magenta in color. Flowering is followed by spiny red (when ripe) fruits. The fruits can be eaten like strawberries and produce a sugary juice.
