Hedgehog Cactus

Hedgehog Exhibit, Desert Foothills Scenic Drive, 1995

Also known as strawberry cactus, Engelmann’s cactus, torch cactus and Engelmann’s hedgehog. A member of the Cactus Family.

Can grow up to 20″ in height. Largest specimens found along the drive are approximately 8″ tall.
Green, cylindrical stems grow in clusters. The plant blooms during March through April.
Prefer sandy soil and hillsides at elevations up to 5,000′.
Cup-shaped flowers are magenta in color. Flowering is followed by spiny red (when ripe) fruits. The fruits can be eaten like strawberries and produce a sugary juice.
